What is the prostate?
The prostate gland is a fleshy and muscular organ that is situated around the neck of the bladder where it completely surrounds the urethra like a collar. The illustration below will make this clearer.

The prostrate produces a milky-white fluid, which carries semen during sexual intercourse. In young men, the prostate is about the size of a walnut but as they grow older, the gland size gets progressively larger. This condition is called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and is very common in men over 50 years of age. It is natural part of ageing but nevertheless is a disease state that may interfere with your life. BPH is a combination of benign enlargement of the prostate and increase in muscle tone in the area around the bladder outlet.
As a result of this enlargement of the prostate gland, the urethra is constricted causing obstruction to the free flow of urine.

What are the signs & symptoms of BPH?
The symptoms of BPH vary from man to man. Sometimes an enlarged prostate may cause little or no trouble at all while a smaller prostate may be more irritating.

How to get the most out of your treatment with HYTRIN (terazosin HCl)
Your doctor has prescribed you Hytrin because you have been diagnosed as experiencing the urinary symptoms of BPH. Symptomatic BPH is a fact of life for millions of men, and you shouldn't feel upset or disturbed because you have been diagnosed with this condition. To receive the greatest benefits from your use of HYTRIN, however, you should follow your doctor's guidelines both now and in the future.
FOLLOWING YOUR DOCTOR'S DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS
You should be sure to follow your doctor's instructions exactly and to take your HYTRIN tablets every day. If for any reason you forget to take your HYTRIN tablets, please contact your doctor for instructions. It is advisable to take your Hytrin tablet at bedtime.
TRACKING THE RESULTS OF THE THERAPY
As you use HYTRIN, you may want to keep a track of your BPH symptoms. The Americn Urological Association (AUA) has developed a symptom questionnaire to help you and your doctor keep track of your urinary symptoms. Two questionnaires are given here.
Answer one questionnaire before you begin to take Hytrin. Then answer the other one after taking HYTRIN for four weeks. Comparing the results from before and after you begin therapy will help you analyze the results of your use of HYTRIN.
